Dylon Pollinger is in charge of the Moosfluh railway service. This summer, he also worked as a summer patrol officer. In this interview, he talks about his experiences.

You’re the first summer patrol officer at Aletsch Bahnen AG—how did you end up with this job?
My supervisor brought it to my attention. I really enjoy biking myself, especially in the Aletsch Arena. That’s why I know the various hiking trails and bike trails very well, so I could hardly say no.

What does a typical workday look like for you as a summer patrol officer?
Since the Blausee Trail is currently the only one on Riederalp, my typical workday hardly changes. In addition to my duties operating the Moosfluh Glacier Cable Car, I perform daily inspections and occasionally carry out minor repairs. Since the trail was well-built by VAST Trails, I don’t have to spend much time on maintenance. Because our guests are skilled cyclists, I’ve only had to respond to accidents twice.

What were the biggest challenges?
For me, the job was something new. I had to learn how maintenance and rescue operations work in the summer. The terrain is different in the summer than in the winter. There are more injuries, and they look worse.

What do you always carry in your backpack?
A first-aid kit is a must.

What experience stands out most in your memory?
My second call. An eight-year-old girl broke her arm while biking. I was impressed by how she handled the situation.

What kind of feedback have you received about your work?
Very positive. It’s always nice to hear how well the trail rides.

What advice would you like to share with guests visiting the Aletsch Arena?
The Blausee Trail is suitable for all ages. That’s why I also recommend that non-bikers give the Blausee Trail a try.

What’s your most important tip for bikers?
Don’t overestimate your abilities. It’s also a good idea to take it a little slower the first time you ride the trail.

Will you be working as a trail patrol officer again next summer?
Exactly—I’ll be out on the trails as a patrol officer again.

And what do you do in the winter?
In the winter, I work on the Moosfluh cable car, transporting guests to the glacier and our slopes.

How do you like the Blausee Trail yourself?
I think it’s great, and I believe there’s something for everyone. You can ride slowly or fast—it’s always fun.

Do you ever go biking yourself on your days off?
I’ve only been biking regularly for five years. But when I have nothing to do, I’m almost always on my bike, and I’m often on it at work, too.
